| New media is the technology that can be seen everywhere on a day-to-day basis. Proof of this is showcased on local television channels, radio stations, and even some modern day museums. TV programs like NBC’s Heroes for example goes through a long editing processes before it is ever aired. Some scenes may sometimes have to be shot multiple times before the perfect scene is chosen for the final project. As students in this theater class we actually had the chance to make our own film. We went through every process from filming, editing different scenes, to putting it all together to create an amazing film. Before we even started filming my three friends and myself had to plan every scene out and figure out what angle would we be filming from. We had to get a cast together to play the different actors and given them their lines. The four of us decided to make a short thriller that took place entirely on a college campus. The filming process was very entertaining and a big learning experience because we tried our best to shoot every scene as if it was part of a big budget Hollywood film. When we finally got all our scenes on film we sat down to start the editing process. The four of us got together and chose the scenes we wanted to be in out final project. To make our movie similar to something you would see on TV we decided to add some background music to some of the scenes to make them more suspenseful. After a couple of long grueling hours of editing we came up with our final work. We ended the film with closing credits and even added bloopers to entertain our audience while the credits role. We also got to post our film on the Internet where millions of people are now able to view and enjoy our work. It’s this new media technology that allowed us to accomplish all of this, from the use of cameras to using one single computer to edit and present our film to the world. We were able to do something that TV and radio stations do on a daily basis, which was a great feeling, knowing that people are going to be able to see and criticize our work. Another project I was able to work on used the same concept that some museum information booths use, and that is the picture slideshow. Museum information booths give you different pictures with commentary in the background about certain exhibits. My project however told a love story with the use of over 30 still frame pictures of my ex girlfriend and myself. I also used a song in the background to help tell the story that was unfolding in front of the audience. Our first class project however was the simplest one to create. Our objective was to use three different pictures and create a story or theme by creating a collage. The uses of collages are mostly seen in magazines where the artist has only pictures to get their story across to an audience. This class has given me a new appreciation for the technology that goes behind the movies and music that I enjoy so much. It was a great experience being able to create my own media and present it to my peers. |
