To the left is my collage I created using Photoshop. For this project I combined four images, the background of the beach, the portrait of myself, the object of an outlet and the lifeguard stand. Below and to the left is my slideshow, which I created using Photoshop and iPhoto. I combined images of the beach and colored drops in a vase and set the images to "Drop in the Ocean" by Michelle Branch. Below is my film created using iMovie. It is a silent film set to "These Walls" by Teddy Geiger and "Let the Flames Begin" by Paramore. |
My relationship to new media has greatly changed throughout the semester. In the beginning of the semester, I had very little experience creating media pieces using Photoshop, and had never used iPhoto or iMovie. Now, at the end of the semester, I have successfully created three media pieces that I put a lot of effort into and am very happy with the outcome. The creative process for the projects I completed throughout the semester was kind of difficult for me. Once I came up with an idea that I liked and thought would work, using the technology would somehow always change it at least a little bit. Whether this was through learning the Photoshop effects, not being able to play the pictures in my slideshow as fast as I would like in iPhoto or discovering the audio effects in iMovie, my project always came out different than I had first thought of it. Overall, I like the final outcomes much better than my very first ideas. When I went to see the Bacchae piece, it took me a few minutes to get into it, but once I did I was completely absorbed. The film on the background screen completely enhanced the performance on the stage for me. Without the new media aspect, I probably would not have enjoyed the performance as much. Also, trying to imagine the play without the film in the background, it feels as though the characters would have been much more one dimensional and the story would not have been as dramatic. In this instance, new media added more depth and tension to the piece, making it much more interesting to watch. What made it more interesting to me was that you saw each characters emotions and internal struggle or point of view through the film in the background. This feature greatly enhanced the story and was another way for the actors to portray their character. After going through the process of creating my own new media pieces, realizing the great amount of time it takes, the usual technology complications, and all the rest of the process, I was able to appreciate and enjoy this performance so much more. Through my exposure to new media throughout the semester I have realized that combining different medias, such as photos and music, or film and a live play, can greatly enhance the artistic expression. Sometimes getting your idea and concept for a piece to translate through the piece to the audience can be very challenging. New media can make that simpler by providing more than one channel of communication to do so. It can also make the piece more interesting and captivating for the audience. My relationship to new media has changed and developed throughout the semester. I feel as though I now have a greater appreciation for the creation process of a new media piece and a greater enjoyment of seeing or experiencing a new media piece. I am also much more confident and more likely to use media technologies, such as Photoshop, to edit my photographs. |
